The Grande Traversée du Jura snowshoeing route is a beautiful winter hiking route; it is unique in France. It begins in Métabief, in the Doubs department, goes through the Haut-Jura regional nature park, and ends in Giron, in the Ain department, covers over 117 km and can be hiked as you wish.
The trail named “Around the Retord plateau” is a loop of approximately 35 km in the Ain department. It does not follow the main course of the GTJ, and is accessible from the Plans d’Hotonnes ski resort, the Cuvery pass or the village of Poizat.
Combining the pleasure of hiking in the snow and the discovery of the natural environment, it is designed to provide optimal and safe snowshoeing conditions while taking snowshoe hikers through the most beautiful landscapes of the Jura Mountains.
Your average speed when hiking with snowshoes is about 3 km/hr, sometimes less if there is a lot of snow and the weather is bad, so we advise you to plan on a distance of 10 to 15 km per day maximum; this way you are sure to finish your hike whatever the snow conditions. Our network of lodging providers is quite extensive, which allows for frequent stops and makes this route accessible for hikers of all levels.
